FED:Combet to attend climate forum in Belgium
CANBERRA, April 24 AAP - Federal Climate Change Minister Greg Combet is to attend an
international forum on practical responses for major economies to cut carbon emissions
in fighting climate change.
Mr Combet is scheduled to attend the 10th Major Economies Forum on Energy and Climate
(MEF) in Brussels on April 26 and 27.
The meeting would be the first between the major economies since the United Nations
climate change negotiations at Cancun in Mexico last December, he said.
"Countries are focusing on ways to implement the Cancun Agreements, including actions
to curb carbon pollution, improve reporting and to assist vulnerable developing countries
to build resilience to climate impacts," Mr Combet said in a statement on Sunday.
"The MEF is an opportunity to get the world's 20 largest emitters, responsible for
around 80 per cent of global carbon pollution, to discuss the way forward for combating
climate change on a global scale."
MEF membership comprises ministerial representatives from 20 of the world's highest
emitters including the US, China, India, the European Union, South Africa, Brazil and
Indonesia.
Mr Combet said he would also hold discussions with international and European experts
in carbon pricing and trading, as well as with representatives of multinational businesses
with an interest in the Australian government's plans for introducing a price on carbon.
